Update

Here is my finished version of the lapghan. If you have pictures of yours that you would like to send me I'll post them up here too.

This site will be staying here and I will update it over the summer in bits and pieces for the fall classes.

If you want to see some other nice videos of different stitches in the meantime take a look at The Art of Crochet

Sixth Class Notes

  • Links to the Baby Hat and Booties patterns. Also, the tote bag pattern that starts basically like the hat is from the Lion Brand website. You may have to register to see it but it is free and you can opt out of their marketing email.

Another blocking resource

There is a nice tutorial on pin and spray blocking over on the CrochetMe blog.

Fifth Class Notes

I posted written instructions for the granny square under Sampler Squares Week 3.

Here is the link to some Babette Blanket pictures and one more here.

Granny square pictures from the Granny-along including a couple pictures of a single granny throw in grays and in purple, pink, and white.

If you get all ambitious and have a section put together and want a cute, scalloped border on the outside edge of the whole thing I posted instructions on the borders and edging section. I'll have pictures up next week. It's the little scalloped one I showed some of you class before last.

Fourth Class Notes

  • I have added instructions for the front post stitch under the Sampler Squares Week 4 link. The instructions include a link to a video showing both front and back post stitch.

  • I have also added instructions (including a video), a chart, and a picture of the V stitch .

  • There is a photo of the bulls-eye square on the Sampler Squares Week 3 page.

  • Please look at the granny square videos below.

  • If you would like a refresher - here is a slip stitch video

  • When changing colors on the striped squares, tie your different color yarn on at the end of the row. I'll make a little video this weekend on changing colors/tying on the new color.

  • From the Second Class Notes: You can read some about changing colors in other situations than at the end of rows at Annie's Attic and there is a great video of changing yarn in the middle of a row at NexStitch that shows how to hide the loose ends.

  • REMEMBER - No class next week. If you have any problems with anything please call or email me. If you need to see something I can make more videos if they are helpful

Over-ambitious

Yes, I was deeply over-ambitious for this class. In the interest of not scaring everyone off, here is the revised schedule. We'll also talk about an extra class maybe a week or two after the real last class as a "help and wrap up session" sort of thing.

REVISED SCHEDULE

I've also updated the chart.

The Granny Square Videos

Here are three videos on working a granny square. If you have any trouble viewing them, they are also at http://crochet101.blip.tv/

If you are not in my class you should know these videos presume that you can already chain and double crochet.

The first one is a short video on how to start crocheting a granny square:

The second video continues with the second round of your granny square:

And the third video shows the third round and how to continue in the pattern until it is as big as you want it to be:

Third Class Notes

I'd like to apologize again for the brain hemorrhage that was the end of today's class. I will try to post video of what I was trying to do on Friday or Saturday. Here are some actually coherent notes that I wrote yesterday for you:

The first and most important thing about reading patterns is to understand the abbreviations. There is a link on the link list for the Craft Yarn Council of America master abbreviation list (the one I handed out in class) under "Crochet Abbreviations". If you want the whole booklet it is at Standards and Guidelines.

Annie's Attic has a nice article on reading patterns and SweaterBabe has some useful tips. Peasie has a good tutorial on a basic granny square that also translates pattern-ese for you.

If you want to practice your pattern-reading skills, take a look at the patterns in the "Additional Sampler Squares" section and see what you can do. I have some of them up as patterns only for practice and I'll put up the longer version of the directions in a couple of weeks.

CrochetMe has some great illustrated instructions on three ways to start a piece worked in the round like our granny squares or bulls-eye squares.

Another use for granny squares

See the granny square bowl over at The Hook and I. Too cute!
